About the event
PRIVATE EVENT Bear Scout Troop Owl Prowl at Bulkeley Hill Preserve on Bulkeley Hill Road, Colchester CT. Tuesday, November 21, 5:30 PM.
Members of the CLT, free; non-Member adults $5.00 each; children under 18, free.
We are so happy to welcome the Bear Scouts and their families to this hike! We will meet at the Bulkeley Hill Preserve parking lot before dusk, at 4:00 pm, for cider and hot cocoa (or bring your own beverage). Bring a fold out chair or blanket to sit on if you would like. We will first discuss the different wildlife we may see and hear in the preserve.
Following the intro talk, we will take a moonlit quiet hike through the BHP trails and look for signs of owls and other nocturnal wildlife. Plus, see our own Colchester trails from a different, night time view.
As the sun sets (expected to be by 4:25 PM that evening) we will hit the trail and use a sound app with a blue tooth speaker to call our local native owls (there are many!) and see if they reply and join us as we hike. We wil travel about 2 miles of the trail, or less, since it a slow hike. Expect the hike itself to take about an hour, possibly a little longer depending on attention span and how cold it is that night.
Please register at the ticket link, then return to the hike page to sign the digital waver and pay for your ticket (for non-members). Directions: For the GPS, use 243 Bulkeley Hill Road, the preserve lot is directly across from the mailbox at that address. There is a wooden sign with the name of the preserve at the entrance. The parking lot is a gravelled space for several cars. We will meet on the grassy area.
Directions:
From Rt. 16/Middletown Ave, turn onto Bulkeley Hill Road and go about 1.5 miles, the lot will be on your right.
Please note: NO dogs for this hike, please. Please dress for the weather and wear appropriate boots or sneakers. Tick protection is strongly suggested in all seasons.
Heavy rain or icy conditions cancels. We are happy to reschedule with the troop if that happens. You will be emailed about any changes. Moderate elevation, non-groomed dirt trail with rocks and roots.
Low light or red light flashlights and lanterns are OK, but please no bright cell phone lights, bright LED headlamps or flashlights on this hike. This is to encourage wildlife to stay in sight. The hike leader will have a red-shift flashlight.
Cameras (with no flash) and a fascination with nature encouraged. A separate waiver for each guest is required, minors (under 18) must have their own waiver completed and signed by their legal parent or guardian.
